Jay Gruden in awe of Montez Sweat: ‘He eats up ground when he runs’

As OTAs and spring drills continue throughout the NFL, there’s one first-round draft pick that is creating a buzz in Washington.

No, it’s not Dwayne Haskins, but rather the other player that the Redskins were high on; so much in fact that they decided to give up two second-round picks in order to trade back into the first round to grab him with the 26th pick.

His name is Montez Sweat, and he is the new “Monster” of the NFL.

Listed at 6’6″ and 260 pounds, Sweat brings high accolades with him out of Mississippi State. He was considered one of the bigger steals in the draft and now is showing his potential in training camp while drawing praise from teammates and coaches.

“Big, big dude,” outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan said of Sweat, via Redskins.com. “And for him to have a 4.4 [40-yard dash time], it’s kind of like ‘Oh my god.'”

Redskins coach Jay Gruden told reporters earlier in the week that he thought Sweat was already one of the fastest players on the team and called his length overwhelming.

“I have no doubt that he’s going to play a lot,” Gruden said. “The skill set that he has is quite evident. You see his length and then you watch him run after practice and he’s faster than anybody we have probably right now.”

He eats up ground when he runs,” Gruden continued. “It’s like three strides and he’s all the way across the field. It’s crazy.”

The Washington defense took a hit on Monday with the injury suffered by Reuben Foster, but the realization of skills possessed by their new defensive lineman is sure to ease the pain.

There’s a new dominant edge rusher in the league, and he resides in the Nation’s Capital.
