Jay Gruden hints Bryce Love might redshirt entire rookie year

Washington Redskins running back Bryce Love doesn’t sound any closer to a return as the fourth week of the preseason gets underway.

Jay Gruden, speaking with the media, admitted the rookie could end up skipping the entire year, per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington: “Jay Gruden says ‘very possible’ that 2019 will be a redshirt year for rookie RB Bryce Love. On PUP list now and that doesn’t seem like it’s changing anytime soon.”

Gruden had said near the end of July that Love probably wouldn’t be on the 53 for Week 1. But this seems like an escalation of sorts, with the usually-vague coachspeak simply transitioning into an admission Love could miss the entire year.

That’s an unfortunate development, though Love was always a luxury pick in the first place and the backfield looks just fine with Derrius Guice making his comeback.

Everybody wins given the circumstances, as Love doesn’t have to rush back and save a backfield that needs his help.
