Jay Gruden has an unfortunately honest answer about Redskins’ QB situation

Coach Jay Gruden admitted what has been unfortunately apparent: the Washington Redskins don’t have a plan at quarterback.

Washington has three quarterbacks in the mix to start on Sunday against the New England Patriots in Week 5. The Redskins, who have yet to win a game this year, haven’t looked good with quarterbacks Case Keenum or Dwayne Haskins behind center. Keenum has a foot injury and quarterback Colt McCoy is dealing with a leg injury. Haskins, a 2019 first-round pick who may be the only healthy quarterback, had an NFL debut which featured three interceptions in Week 4.

So, coach, what’s your plan at quarterback?

“We don’t have one right now,” Gruden told reporters on a conference call on Wednesday. “I’m going to go out here at practice today. We have individual work we’re going to do. We want to see the health of the guys, first of all. See where Dwayne’s at. Then I’ll make a decision shortly.”

Gruden was asked whether he’d made his decision on Wednesday, and he chuckled as he said: “I don’t know yet. I might just wait until Sunday at 1 o’clock. Figure it out then.”

Gruden surely didn’t mean to establish doom and gloom over the lack of certainty surrounding his quarterback situation. He was merely stating that it was, indeed, uncertain. But with the Redskins’ franchise listing under Gruden, who is likely on the coaching hot seat, his answer was probably too honest for his own good. It provided yet another opportunity for Washington to be the butt of the NFL world’s jokes.
