Jay Gruden doesn’t expect Bryce Love to start season on active roster

Given his past accomplishments in college, there is understandable hype for rookie Washington Redskins running back Bryce Love.

But the Stanford product’s chance to meet those expectations will have to wait thanks to his prolonged recovery from the injury that dropped him to the fourth round on draft day.

Washington coach Jay Gruden made this clear enough Wednesday, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk:

“Bryce is on [the non-football injury list] still,” Gruden told reporters. “He’s still recovering. It will be a little while for him.”

“I don’t think he’ll be on our active roster Week One,” Gruden said.

The Redskins certainly aren’t hurting for backs right now anyway, not with Derrius Guice, Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson leading the charge.

But Washington taking Love wasn’t a bad reach by any means given the age or injury histories of some of those names, not to mention Love’s massive upside.

Should Love stick on the NFI though, he’s looking at missing at least the first six weeks of his debut season.
