Jay Gruden confirms QB competition for Dwayne Haskins, Case Keenum

As expected, it is the Dwayne Haskins vs. Case Keenum show for the Washington Redskins this summer.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden confirmed the roster battle during a meeting with the media at the team’s second day of rookie minicamp.

“Yeah, for sure. We have to have that,” Gruden said, according to Pro Football Talk’s Charean Williams. “I mean, Case coming off of the most experience is great. Colt has the most experience with this terminology in this system, and Dwayne was the 15th pick in the draft. We’ll see what happens.”

Gruden mentioned Colt McCoy, but he’s still working his way back from a broken leg. The fact the Redskins traded for Keenum and drafted Haskins at No. 15 seems to suggest McCoy is on the outside looking in.

In theory, Haskins should have as good of a shot as Keenum at the gig. Keenum is a veteran, but he’s also learning a new system and is playing for his third team in three seasons, having been traded by the Denver Broncos for underperforming in 2018.

There is always the chance the Redskins don’t want to throw Haskins to the wolves as a rookie. But Gruden had some success doing that in Cincinnati with Andy Dalton, so it might not be as big of a factor as outsiders think.
