Jay Gruden cites Terry McLaurin as one reason for Josh Doctson’s release

Washington Redskins rookie wideout Terry McLaurin didn’t see notable action during the preseason.

Maybe that was by design.

The Redskins cut former first-round pick Josh Doctson as part of the cut-down process and he’s gone on to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.

As JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington captured, the emergence of McLaurin made the decision easier: “Gruden says Josh Doctson is a ‘good player and we wish him nothing but the best’ but the emergence of Terry McLaurin made the decision to cut Doctson easier”

Kyle Stackpole of Redskins.com noted Gruden as saying “we decided to keep Terry McLaurin at the X [receiver].”

Together, it would seem these notes imply McLaurin is a starter right out of the gates for the Redskins. It was a little strange to see his limited usage during preseason games, yet it appears he has flashed enough to earn the role.

Given the Redskins still figure to employ a spread-it-around attack, the Redskins won’t be asking McLaurin to put up major numbers. Given everything that has occurred, he should go into the season with plenty of confidence while getting his first pro reps.
