Jay Glazer has some interesting thoughts on Zac Taylor, Bengals front office

Plenty of thoughts about Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor and his status with the team leaked public since the team’s 0-8 start.

Most haven’t been overly positive either given the circumstances. But Jay Glazer of The Athletic takes a different beat, suggesting Taylor knew what he was getting into when he signed on the dotted line with one of the NFL’s most unique organizations:

Add to that they certainly don’t have as big of a scouting department as everyone else. They absolutely have some talented people in there but they don’t have the same staff size as other teams. So no, I don’t see them changing anything, as long as the owner wants to be the GM. I know the results aren’t there, but guys, you’ve got to believe me, Zac Taylor is a hell of a coach. But they have a ton of work to do in gutting that roster before things get better. Marvin Lewis should get a freakin’ Nobel Peace Prize for what he did in that place.

That sure paints the picture of a coach who has a long leash and won’t see too much backlash from the team if he can only win one or two games. And yes, that sentiment about Marvin Lewis continues to grow, even among fans.

But Taylor’s status, provided he can’t win more than one or two games, serves as an interesting topic. He’s been dealt a poor hand by a front office that didn’t realize or want to admit it is rebuilding. Injuries have also savaged his roster. Yet, he’s also had some clear growing pains as a coach, when it comes to playcalling and otherwise.

We’ll see if the vibes from Glazer’s breakdown can withstand a miserable end-of-season sprint for the Bengals. Whether that happens now somewhat rests on the arm of rookie quarterback Ryan Finley, not Andy Dalton.
