Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler has responded strongly to his ex-wife Kristin Cavallari’s recent claims about their divorce settlement. The former Chicago Bears player addressed her statements during an episode of his Take It Outside podcast in August 2024.
The controversy began in June when Cavallari made bold claims about her financial independence during her Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour podcast. She stated that her lifestyle brand Uncommon James generates close to $50 million annually and insisted she is the 100% owner who has never taken outside funding. More importantly, she claimed she never received any money from Cutler in their divorce.
Cutler called Cavallari’s claims “borderline slander” and “completely false” during his Take it Outside podcast. The 42-year-old former quarterback said he found her statements irresponsible and reckless. He explained that no judge in Tennessee would have approved a divorce settlement where he kept all his NFL earnings while she received nothing. Cutler, who earned approximately $122 million during his 12-year NFL career, emphasized that both parties had lawyers during the divorce proceedings.
Cutler provides evidence to counter claims
The retired athlete revealed he has a 67-page divorce decree signed by a judge that details the financial breakdown of their settlement. While he refused to share exact numbers, Cutler guaranteed that Cavallari received “definitely not zero dollars” from their divorce. When asked by his podcast co-host if the amount was enough for someone to live comfortably for life, Cutler responded “without a doubt.”

Cutler also addressed Cavallari’s business claims, noting that Uncommon James was created during their marriage and should be considered a marital asset. He expressed frustration at having to address these matters publicly, saying he hated discussing the situation but felt compelled to respond because the claims were untrue.
The former couple, who married in 2013 and split in 2020 after seven years together, share three children: Camden, Jaxon, and Saylor. Their divorce was finalized in 2022. According to sources close to the situation, a person familiar with the couple’s marriage described Cutler’s response as “a standard gaslighting tactic from a known narcissist” when speaking to People magazine. The source claimed his answer was manipulated into something different from what Cavallari was initially saying.
