Javonte Green beats out Yante Maten, Max Strus for final roster spot

Per an announcement from the Boston Celtics, rookie guard Max Strus and forward Yante Maten have been released to bring the Celtics down to the maximum allotted roster spots — 17, including two two-way players — ahead of the 2019-20 regular-season opener.

Former Windy City Bulls forward Kaiser Gates was released on Friday.

As a result, rookie guard Javonte Green — who was signed to a partially-guaranteed deal, like Strus — appears to have made the team’s regular-season roster.

Green was one of the team’s most efficient players throughout Summer League and preseason, utilizing his elite athleticism to its fullest potential as he attacked the rim with ferocity and made a noticeable impact with his on-ball defense.

Currently 26 years old, Green also fits right in with Boston’s relatively young group of hoopers.

As the Celtics look towards the future, fans in Boston will continue to appreciate a player whose defensive capabilities has coaches wanting him to emulate Celtics of days past, like Tony Allen (whose defense was certainly useful for Boston on their way to winning a championship in 2008).
