Javon Wims looking explosive in workouts in Jacksonville

Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy ended the virtual offseason a week and a half early so players would have time to put in extra work just before training camp starts in late July. One player that is taking advantage of the time is wide receiver Javon Wims.

Wims was seen working out in Jacksonville, Florida, with former Georgia teammate Jake Fromm and college football players from Division II, Division III, JuCo, and high school.

The former seventh-round pick is coming off a 2019 season where he recorded 18 receptions, 186 yards and one touchdown in 16 games. Heading into his third year, Wims is hoping to get a bigger role.

During the workout session, trainer Jerrand Nesmith was in attendance and noticed improvements on how well Wims was performing.

“Javon looked great, very explosive, and very strong with his hands,” Nesmith told Bears Wire. “Very precise with his route running. He knows what he is doing and how to react to different coverages. He has quick feet and he has great body control.”

In the last two weeks of the 2019 season, Wims was targeted 16 times, but only caught six passes for 49 yards. Wims got some playing time toward the end of the season, but for the whole 2020 season, it’s not going to come easy as he is going to compete with Riley Ridley, Cordarrelle Patterson, Ted Ginn Jr., Trevor Davis and rookie Darnell Mooney.
