Javon Wims fortunate to come away unscathed after altercation in practice

During the dog days of summer for NFL teams, there comes a certain point where players sometimes lose their cool while practicing against one another.

That day finally happened for the Chicago Bears when WR Javon Wims and CB Prince Amukamara came to blows during practice at Halas Hall on Tuesday morning – and Wims was fortunate to not have suffered a hand injury.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Wims was agitated near the end of practice and ended up throwing a football at the veteran corner before Wims began punching Amukamara’s helmet, who refrained from hitting Wims back.

The two were separated by teammates, but S Eddie Jackson had to be held back from going after Wims.

Coach Matt Nagy diffused the situation, talking to both players and receivers coach Mike Furrey. The practice resumed and finished shortly after.

Nagy was not concerned about the altercation from his two players, but did drop a rhetorical question when asked if it was smart for Wims to throw a haymaker at Amukamara while he was wearing a helmet.

“You tell me,” the coach said.

Fortunately for Wims, his hand is just fine. But for the second-year pro out of Georgia, one swing could have jeopardized his season and suddenly weakened a deep wide receiver group, just hours after the team waived undrafted rookie free agent WR Emanuel Hall.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt and the team can look forward to hitting someone else on Friday evening against the New York Giants.
