Red-shirt supporters have been urged to mount a "send Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha home" campaign to prevent him returning as prime minister.
Jatuporn Prompan, chairman of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship and a leading figure in the Puea Chat Party, said the red shirts can keep Gen Prayut out of politics in future by voting for Puea Chat, a party he describes as being in the pro-democracy camp.
Gen Prayut is a prime ministerial candidate of the pro-regime Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP).
Mr Jatuporn made the comment in Khon Kaen on Wednesday where he was addressing a crowd of supporters.
"We have tried for 12 years with no success to bring former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra home. Today, with democratic power in our hands we can send Gen Prayut home," he said.
He said the red shirts and Puea Chat supporters should go to the polls on March 24 opposing Gen Prayut and cast their ballots accordingly for the party.
The party's MP candidates have a mission to fight in the democratic system and drive dictators back to their homes where they belong, he said.
Mr Jatuporn was out canvassing for votes for Pol Col Udon Charnnuwong, Puea Chat's candidate in Khon Kaen's Constituency 6.
About 3,000 people attended the campaign rally yesterday.
Puea Chat has held six campaign rallies in Khon Kaen. Mr Jatuporn noted many supporters share the party's anti-dictatorship stance.
Political sources said Puea Chat is popular among red shirts living mainly in the North and Northeast although it has tried to tap into election strongholds of other parties in Bangkok.
The party has joined a chorus of calls for Gen Prayut to step down as premier to show his sincere belief in a free and fair election.
Critics believe that by staying on, Gen Prayut is in a position to use the state to favour a particular party in the election.
