Jason Roy in tears as he pulls up injured in huge blow for England's T20 World Cup hopes

England star Jason Roy suffered a potentially tournament-ending injury in their defeat against South Africa, with the opener left in tears after pulling up with a calf problem.

After setting off for a routine single, Roy pulled up no more than two strides into the run, hopping the rest of the way on his right leg.

Roy then collapsed on the ground and began to tear up, before expressing his frustration as the stump mic picked up several expletives.

It was speculated on commentary that Roy had suffered either a calf or a hamstring injury and it has now been confirmed that it was his calf.

Roy was forced to retire hurt and, with the semi-finals and final taking place next week, it seems highly unlikely that he will play any further part in England's T20 World Cup campaign.

The England physio and bowler Tom Curran helped Roy off the field and he was replaced by Moeen Ali, after Jos Buttler indicated to Eoin Morgan that he wanted a left-hander to join him at the crease.

The loss of Roy is a significant blow to England as the opener is their second-highest run scorer at the tournament behind Buttler.

Buttler has also credited Roy with helping him star at the top of the order, saying after his blistering 71 not out against Australia: "You get quite inspired by Jason at the other end when he is running down first ball against Hazlewood and running down against Cummins.

"These are top bowlers and the way he can impose himself inspires at the other end.

"We didn’t have any scoreboard pressure. Just keep imposing ourselves on the opposition is the way we’ve championed trying to play.

"We don’t try and play it safe so if we talk that way, we have to go out and play that way as well."
