Jason Myers says goodbye to Jets, will go back to Seahawks

Update: March 13, 2019, 1:46 p.m.

Jason Myers is signing with the Seattle Seahawks, according to ESPN’s Dianna Russini. He’ll get a four-year deal worth $15-16 million.

The Seahawks cut Myers last summer in favor of Sebastian Janikowski.

After a standout 2018 season that resulted in a pro bowl appearance and All-Pro selection, Jason Myers took to Twitter to announce that he would not be back with the Jets in 2019.

Myers was the first Jets kicker to ever make a Pro Bowl, making 33-of-36 of his kicks during the 2018 campaign.

The Jets decided to allow Myers to walk away as a free agent as discussions tapered off a few days ago and New York refused to budge from its price point, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

New York will now be in the market for their fourth kicker in as many years. The Jets had made it one of their priorities to get Myers a new deal this offseason, but it appears that they refused to give in to his demands.

New York took a rather odd approach to Myers’ free agency, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. The Jets did not show any urgency in giving Myers a new deal, as they believe his skill set was not worth a lucrative contract.

Myers enjoyed a career revival with New York. After being cast off from the Seahawks last training camp, he signed with the Jets and won the kicking job. Myers was nearly perfect during the 2018 season, including making 6-of-7 field goals from 50+ yards/

After finding a reliable kicker, the Jets are going to be looking again. The market is rather thin at the position, as top free agent Robbie Gould was franchise tagged by the San Francisco 49ers, while Stephen Gostkowski may be out of New York’s price range as well.

Myers marks the third member of the Jets special teams unit that will not be back next season, as Kevin Pierre-Louis and Terrence Brooks were shown the door in February.
