Jason Manford jokes he's 'absolutely livid' as Tesco reject him for temp job

Jason Manford has jokingly shared his faux-outrage at being snubbed by Tesco over his application for an £8-an-hour job at the supermarket chain.

The Salford-born star filled out a genuine application for for a customer services role at his local Express store but was turned down by recruiters.

Jason, 38, said he was 'just trying to do his bit' when he tried out for the job in March when major supermarkets were requesting more staff to meet the demands of customers panic buying in the coronavirus outbreak.

The funnyman even tried to persuade the company into hiring him for the job by signing his CV off with "'previous experience: Comedian. So I know that it’s all in the delivery!' Still nothing".

After being given a rejection email, Jason tweeted: "Absolutely livid Tesco. I was only trying to do my bit.

"I hope the better person got and enjoys the job, I'll be watching," he joked.

After being alerted to Jason's response, Tesco have now issued a reply to the comedian.

A spokesperson said: "We've recruited around 50,000 temporary workers during the Coronavirus pandemic and they have played a huge part in helping us to serve customers safely during these unprecedented times.

"Jason's skills would have no doubt brought a lot of joy to our customers and colleagues, so it’s a shame he didn't make the deadline for this vacancy.

"But should he ever want to join the Tesco family in the future, we’d be happy to receive an application from him."

The star had applied a role at the Alderley Road Tesco Express in Wilmslow, which is local to his Cheshire home where Jason lives with wife Lucy Dyke and their children.

A few people had accused Jason of waiting Tesco HR's time with his application but he insists he had been serious about wanting a job.

Insisting this was not the case and wanted to chip in after finding himself at a loose end after his comedy shows were cancelled.

Jason said: "I applied 7 weeks ago when I thought, like everyone, it was basically wartime and it would require all hands on deck.

Jason defended his decision after many of his fans accused him of 'taking the p***' (Channel 4)

"Curtains got cancelled on the 16th & I applied on the 21st fo quite a few jobs). I have since managed to fill my 'spare time' doing some volunteer driving (this is not 'virtue signalling', just defending myself!) and homeschooling 6 kids (and doing our little quizzes and kids' comedy clubs!) and being made to clean my own house by my wife.

"At the same time I also don't believe "we're all this together". I'm more aware than ever the differences in society & chatting to some of the people I've driven the last few weeks has only highlighted how hard the lockdown has been for people with less money and space.

"I feel extremely fortunate. Hope you're all keeping safe and being kind to yourself and to others," he added.
