Jason Leitch warns Scots 'no foreign holidays until 2022' in leaked video

A leaked video contains a message from Professor Jason Leitch warning Scots they might not get to enjoy any foreign holidays until 2022.

In a video leaked to The Scotsman newspaper, Scotland's national clinical director discouraged Scottish Government staff from booking summer holidays, commenting that he wasn’t even sure what the world would look like 'in terms of free movement,' after Christmas.

The internal video was filmed as Leitch answered questions from civil servants on a range of subjects including vaccines, lockdown and overseas travel, The Scotsman reports.

When asked about booking holidays, Mr Leitch painted a bleak picture, by answering: “I wouldn't book a non-refundable summer holiday if I were you. I might book a holiday in the autumn or Christmas time but even then I'm not entirely sure what the world will look like in terms of freedom of movement.”

He discussed that Scots would still have to “learn what the post-covid world looks like,” and mentioned how the world changed after the Spanish Flu pandemic, warning that this time around it would “would take a little while”.

Professor Jason Leitch also reportedly said Scotland will come out of lockdown measures “very very slowly,” adding that the current restrictions would be in place for “a little bit longer”.

According to the report, Mr Leitch said he and chief medical officer Gregor Smith were “worried” about high levels of cases and had been talking to the First Minister about “resetting the country's expectations” that 1,500 cases a day is a good thing.

He commented: “1,500 is not a good thing - it's awful and it has awful implications for those who get seriously unwell so we need to drop that number further down.”
