Jason Leitch has tempered fears the Premiership season is about be shut down - but warned Covid worst-case scenarios can unfold quickly.
Scotland's national clinical director caused some alarm on Friday by stating the top-flight campaign found itself in a "fragile" situation.
Football below the Championship has been paused for three weeks while SFA chief Ian Maxwell wrote to second-tier sides on Friday night to gauge their position on potentially following suit.
In the top-flight, Celtic currently have 14 players plus boss Neil Lennon and John Kennedy in self-isolation and Leitch emphasised how the virus can quickly "wipe out" entire squads.
But he's hopeful virus growth rates are beginning to slow in Scotland, in which case he believes competitions could be played to a finish.
He told Off the Ball: "I think, if things carry on as they are just now and we can manage to bring this prevalence down a bit...
"Since we last spoke a week ago, there are some green shoots of deceleration.
"I'm mixing my metaphors a little, but the number of people who caught the virus in the last seven days is lower than the number of people who caught it in the previous seven days.
"It's still way too high - 2000 people on Friday, 60-70 deaths every day. Please, do not misunderstand me, we are at a precarious point.
"Maybe the most precarious point we have been at. But, it appears these new safety measures are beginning to slow the rise.
"That would suggest, if we can manage to hold it and decelerate it more - although the restrictions we currently have in place may have to remain for some time - it would mean the professional leagues, hopefully, if everything stays good, they could finish.
"The danger is if you get massive numbers of positives. The players, officials and coaches need to be so, so careful because you can wipe out a team, as you've seen, with a single positive spreading or having to self-isolate.
"It's not difficult to wipe out a whole team."
"Fragile" was the word which caused alarm from Leitch's Friday interview with Sky Sports.
But he's clarified that every sector of society which hasn't been shut down finds itself in a delicate situation.
"I think everything that's still open is fragile," Leitch continued.
"That goes from what we've done to universities and colleges, schools in the last few weeks and professional sport, football or otherwise - that is a privileged position.
"A lot of people are not at their work and professional sport is at its work.
"We want to keep that going but everything that is open is, of course, some form of risk.
"We need to keep that risk as low as we possibly can.
"If you look at the English Premier League, they've been struggling a bit this week. Lots of interviews with the senior leaders of English football, lots of challenging around what the players are doing outside the actual competitive moment of the game where the restrictions are released.
"Masks off the pitch, dressing rooms and, of course, celebrations, all those elements.
"We just want to make sure everyone follows the guidance and keeps themselves safe first and the rest of us."
