Jason Leitch outlines how gym reopening might look and what rules could be in place

Professor Jason Leitch has provided an update on gym reopening plans, and what rules could be in place when fitness fanatics are allowed to return.

Scotland's National Clinical Director says finishing touches are still being put to what lockdown measures will be lifted on April 26.

However he says gyms could well open on the date the country moves down to Covid protection level three.

Professor Leitch told BBC Off the Ball that rules around group exercise and changing rooms would likely remain in place.

He said: "The guidance for exactly what will happen on the 26th (April) is not quite done yet, but I would anticipate if the numbers stay down and everybody does what they should do now, that's how you get gyms open on the 26th. It depends on our behaviour now, not our behaviour on the 26th.

"I would have thought it would look a bit like the last time gyms opened. So individual exercise only, probably not groups yet.

"I'm probably a little bit cautious about lockers and other places with a lot of surfaces where a lot of people gather.

"Then gradually, if the incidence stays down, then all of that gets back to normal.

"I would anticipate probably the guidance looking a bit like it did the last time."

Professor Leitch was also asked about the date bookmakers may reopen across the country.

He added: "Non-essential retail, the aim is for most of that to start to open on the 26th. So the exact categories of what will be in and out of that is not quite confirmed yet, but will be confirmed very, very soon.

"Let me be dull and repeat it. Opening the bookies depends on behaviour now. Not behaviour then."
