Jason Leitch offers Scottish Cup and lower league hope as 'confident' clinical director hints good news is coming

Jason Leitch has revealed he expects news next week on when football below the Championship could restart.

All divisions beneath the second tier have been in shutdown since January and there are rising concerns campaigns will not be be able to finish.

Women's football and the grassroots game has also been halted since the second week of 2021..

The extended pause plunged the Scottish Cup into serious jeopardy with several third round ties still outstanding.

Clubs have offered to introduce regular testing regimes but there's been little to no movement on resuming matches in recent weeks.

National clinical director Leitch insists talks have been progressing well between the SFA and SPFL joint response group, government ministers and clinical advisors.

He hinted there will be a joint league and Scottish Government update over the next seven days.

He told BBC Off the Ball: "It's conversation that's ongoing. We do have some influence.

"We want to do it in a joined-up and collegiate way, we don't like laws for elite sport.

"We don't like to say 'you can' or 'you can't' do that. We want to do it with the joint response group, the minister for sport, me, the clinical advisors and we made quite a lot of progress this week about what that next phase will look like.

"I'm pretty confident there will be news next week which will indicate where we're headed for the next phase and I'm hoping that will be joint Scottish Government and league news because we're trying to do it together.

"It's complicated because at one end there's a list of reasons why we should but at the other end there's 800 positive cases a day, quite a lot of travel.

"These teams are not full-time so they're not quite as protected as some of the full-time teams. It's as straight forward as it perhaps seems but I'm hopeful we can do it with mitigation and safety in place."
