Jason Leitch discusses when gyms will reopen in Scotland and what rules will be in place

Professor Jason Leitch has given an update on plans to reopen gyms and what rules could be in place when they're eventually allowed to open their doors.

Scotland's National Clinical Director said that decisions on what lockdown measures will be lifted later this month are still being made.

It's hoped that gyms will be among the businesses able to reopen on April 26, when the country moves down to covid protection level three.

Professor Leitch told BBC's Off the Ball that the rules surrounding group exercise and changing rooms will likely remain in place when gyms are allowed to open.

He said: "The guidance for exactly what will happen on the 26th (April) is not quite done yet, but I would anticipate if the numbers stay down and everybody does what they should do now, that's how you get gyms open on the 26th. It depends on our behaviour now, not our behaviour on the 26th.

"I would have thought it would look a bit like the last time gyms opened. So individual exercise only, probably not groups yet.

"I'm probably a little bit cautious about lockers and other places with a lot of surfaces where a lot of people gather.

"Then gradually, if the incidence stays down, then all of that gets back to normal. I would anticipate probably the guidance looking a bit like it did the last time."

Professor Leitch was also asked about the date bookmakers may reopen across the country.

He added: "Non-essential retail, the aim is for most of that to start to open on the 26th. So the exact categories of what will be in and out of that is not quite confirmed yet, but will be confirmed very, very soon.

"Let me be dull and repeat it. Opening the bookies depends on behaviour now. Not behaviour then."
