Jason Leitch blasts 'irresponsible' Dundee United over team photograph as he urges SPFL to act

Scotland's national Clinical Director Jason Leitch has slammed Dundee United over a traditional team photograph taken without social distancing and urged the SPFL to act.

The Courier reports the team photo was taken on November 27 and shows 49 members of the squad and coaching staff failing to adhere to guidelines.

Manager Micky Mellon and his entire coaching staff are self-isolating already while NINE players are also in the same situation after three positive tests.

While footballers at the elite level are exempt from the two-metre social distancing rules in place for the rest of the public during training sessions, they must adhere to strict guidance at all other times in line with the rest of Scotland.

Professor Leitch was furious with the club's behaviour, branding it "irresponsible" and once again reminding clubs that Scottish football is in a privileged situation being allowed to continue.

And in a veiled warning, the clinical director warned that football's exemption still depends on clubs following the rules.

He told the Courier: “This is deeply disappointing and irresponsible.

“We were very surprised to see this photograph, which shows a clear breach of the Covid-19 guidelines agreed between the SPFL and the Scottish Government.

“We would expect this to be taken extremely seriously by the football authorities. This action puts individuals and their families at risk of infection and serious illness.

“We now know that some of the individuals in this photograph have subsequently tested positive for Covid-19. Professional football has considerable privileges – these depend on following the guidance.”
