Jason Kerr determined to captain St Johnstone to cup success

He has watched those before him lift silverware.

Now St Johnstone captain Jason Kerr is plotting his own route to cup success.

The Perth side has made a promising start to their Betfred Cup group campaign ahead of Dundee United visiting Perth tonight.

Kerr is determined to book a knockout place and then work through to the latter stages of the competition.

Saints are certainly in good form, unbeaten in five and off the back of a 1-0 win against Kilmarnock.

“We normally go on these wee unbeaten streaks and hopefully that continues,” Kerr said.  “We want to do well in the cup too.

“We’ve started the Betfred Cup well and a win against Dundee United will hopefully see us through.

“We want to win every single game we can.  If you do well at this stage of the cup, you are a few games away from a final.

“Everyone wants to play in a final, especially me.”

Kerr was thrilled with Saints’ defensive display to shut out Kilmarnock on Friday evening.

He added: “I was pretty pleased with that.  The boys’ hard work has paid off.

“It was like going back to the old days with St Johnstone, getting 1-0 victories.

“It’s great to get another clean sheet and that is now back-to-back clean sheets.  Defensively we’re looking good.

“We’re nullifying teams to very few chances. But it’s not just the back three, we defend from the front.

“The striker starts it off with the press and we go from there.”

Danny McNamara netted his first professional goal to clinch the three points.

And Kerr laughed: “Every week he gets a chance but puts it in row Z.  It was nice for Danny to get his first goal.

“I was just hoping he kept the head down.  He made a good contact and I’m sure he will be delighted.

“He will be bigging his goal up.  We always give him a bit of stick because he loves putting up a social media post after the game.

“But we were all really happy for him. He was terrific on Friday, not just for his goal.  He was up and down the flank all day.

“His performances week in, week out have been of a top standard.  We need to keep him fit and he’ll have a really good season.

“It will be really good for him to get all this first team football under his belt.”
