CHICAGO _ Cubs manager Joe Maddon seemed puzzled when assessing the statistics of Phillies All-Star candidate Aaron Nola, who had allowed all four home runs to right-handed hitters.
Anthony Rizzo changed that trend, as he pulled a home run over the right field wall in the second inning as the Cubs surged to a three-run lead over the Phillies.
But that was just the start of a zany chain of events, capped by Jason Heyward's walk-off grand slam with two outs in the ninth off left-hander Adam Morgan that gave the Cubs a 7-5 win and cut their deficit to one game behind the Brewers in the National League Central.
Prior to Heyward's slam, the Cubs lost a 3-0 lead when reliever Steve Cishek surrendered his first home run of the season _ a three-run, game-tying shot to Aaron Altherr on Cishek's first pitch in the sixth. It was the first homer he allowed in 53 innings dating back to last season.
And it got worse for the Cubs, as Dylan Cozens hit his first major-league home run _ a two-run opposite-field shot to left field off closer Brandon Morrow _ in the ninth to give the Phillies a 5-3 lead.
Morrow held the majors' longest active streak of not allowing a homer at 71 innings before Cozens, who entered the game in the bottom of the fifth after Nick Williams left with a sore left wrist.
Nola entered Wednesday night's game with a 2.18 ERA, but he was hampered by two walks that led to two runs in the fourth.
After Rizzo drew the second walk of the fourth, Kris Bryant noticed that no Phillies infielder was covering third base because of the shift on Rizzo and beat everyone to third.
Willson Contreras followed with an RBI single, and Javier Baez hit a sacrifice fly to score Rizzo.
Baez made his second consecutive start at shortstop in place of Addison Russell, who has been bothered by a left middle finger sprain suffered on a swing in the fifth inning of during Sunday's 2-0 win at against the Mets in New York.
Cubs starter Jose Quintana allowed a walk and a single to start the game but retired 15 of the next 16 batters, recording 10 strikeouts.
