MILWAUKEE _ Jason Heyward smacked two home runs to pace a 12-hit attack, leading the Cubs to a 14-8 victory over the Brewers on Saturday at Miller Park and snapping a six-game losing streak.
Heyward and backup catcher Victor Caratini _ who broke a 2-2 tie with a home run in the fifth _ each reached base safely five times. Heyward, who has hit three home runs in his last two games, hit a two-run shot in the second off starter Corbin Burnes and led off the eighth with a blast that sparked a seven-run inning to put the game out of reach.
Pinch-hitter David Bote capped the rally with a three-run double as the Cubs won for the first time since the season opener against the Rangers. The Cubs have scored 10 runs or more in four of their eight games.
Javier Baez led off the sixth with a line drive that struck the top of the center-field fence, hit the wall behind the fence and bounced into play. Lorenzo Cain leaped and crashed into the fence as the ball rolled back toward the plate, and second-base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt indicated the ball was live. Baez slowed down but jogged around the bases and scored about a minute before the umpires discussed the play and ruled it a home run, his fourth of the season.
Albert Almora Jr. followed later with an RBI single, and Cole Hamels hit a sacrifice fly to cap a three-run sixth.
Hamels gave a weary pitching staff six innings of six-hit ball in his second start. He retired the final seven batters he faced and 12 of the last 14.
The Cubs' revamped bullpen, however, continued to struggle. Newcomer Kyle Ryan allowed a hit and walk in the bottom of the seventh, and Allen Webster _ called up to take the place of the demoted Carl Edwards Jr. _ followed by giving up a three-run homer to Ryan Braun.
In the eighth, Randy Rosario issued two walks and a wild pitch that led to an Eric Thames three-run home run.
