Right fielder Jason Heyward was scratched from the Chicago Cubs lineup about 30 minutes before their game Wednesday night against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.
Heyward spoke with manager David Ross before withdrawing from the lineup, the Cubs said.
Heyward's scratch occurred less than an hour before the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers elected to postpone their game in the wake of the Jacob Blake shooting by police in Kenosha, Wis., although the Cubs did not provide a specific reason for Heyward's decision.
A team source said Heyward encouraged his teammates to play.
