Jason Derulo hits back at negative Cats reviews: 'Have critics ever made a film in their life?'

Jason Derulo has questioned the validity of critics after his new film Cats received a deluge of dreadful reviews.

Earlier this week, following the first screening of Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved musical, critics tore the film apart, with The Independent‘s Clarisse Loughrey calling it “improbable and entirely indescribable”.

The Telegraph‘s Tim Robey gave the film zero stars for the second time in his career, writing: “Once seen, the only realistic way to fix Cats would be to spay it, or simply pretend it never happened.”

He called the film “an all-time disaster.”

Derulo, who plays Rum Tum Tugger, isn’t too happy with this response. He told TMZ: ”Reviews don’t matter, man.

“Any time you defy what an art form is, any time you defy all rules, there’s going to be some push-back, obviously. But it’s an incredible piece of art done by some of the best people in the world.”

He continued: “I am just excited for the people to actually see it because reviewers, I mean, what the hell do they know? Have they made a film ever in their life?”

Derulo, who called Hooper a “class act”, suggested that the film could go on to be adored in the future by pointing out that the show – one of the most successful productions in West End history – had negative reviews upon release.

Starring Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson James Corden, and Taylor SwiftCats transfers the stage musical to the screen, using “digital fur technology” to morph its stars into oddly sexualised human-cat hybrids.

Cats is in cinemas now.
