Jason Beattie: Theresa May wants to share out the Brexit blame by inviting Corbyn for talks

After two years of custody Theresa May has finally handed over responsibility for the problem child of Brexit.

The Prime Minister now wants Jeremy Corbyn to share the parenting.

And if he refuses to help then Parliament will be the foster mother.

This may be a genuine attempt by Mrs May to break the deadlock, which will come at a considerable cost if it results in a softer Brexit.

Or it could prove to be another exercise in can kicking if she refuses to accept any of the compromises proposed by the Labour leader.

Mr Corbyn will be aware he is being lined up for a fall.

Jeremy Corbyn will now have to share the blame if no deal can be agreed (PA)

Brexit: Theresa May 'puts deal in Corbyn's hands' by begging him to sit down with her

If he fails to work with the Prime Minister he will share the blame should there be a no-deal Brexit.

But if he works with her to deliver Brexit then he risks splitting his party and a backlash from remain voters who will never accept our departure.

To keep his party together his minimum request should be for a customs union and a second referendum.

Given Mrs May has repeatedly ruled out both these demands is she really prepared to accept them now?

The Labour leader will also be aware that Mrs May’s forthcoming departure means any agreement could be ripped up by her successor.

This is hardly the basis for any meaningful negotiations between the two party leaders.

And if Parliament then fails to agree a way forward then we face another cliff edge on May 22 when the choice will be no-deal or no Brexit.
