Jarrow thug bit partner's nose and left her with fractured eye socket after vicious attack

A man bit his partner's nose and left her with a fractured eye socket following a vicious attack that left her "black and blue".

Dean Tweedie repeatedly punched and kicked his then-partner during a horrific assault that lasted around 45 minutes and only stopped when he realised the extent of the injuries he had caused. The 37-year-old fractured the woman's eye socket and nose and caused her "constant physical and emotional pain".

Tweedie, of Blenkinsop Grove, Jarrow, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on Tuesday to be sentenced for section 47 assault. He had pleaded guilty to the offence.

The court heard that Tweedie and the woman had been in a relationship together for around four years and he had been living in her home for around four weeks at the time of the offence. But on January 26 this year, Tweedie began calling her "nasty names" and was preventing her from leaving the home.

Joe Culley, prosecuting, said: "The complainant believed he was under the influence of drugs and she left and went to her friend's house before going back home after getting a lift from her friend's partner. The defendant started shouting aggressively, accusing her of being dropped off by two men and was calling her a sl** and a sl**."

As Tweedie continued to berate her, the woman went into the kitchen, but he followed behind before, causing her to "fear for her safety".

Mr Culley said: "He grabbed her and repeatedly punched her to the face, eye and all over her body. He bit her nose, causing pain, and delivered punches and kicks to her body, which continued for about 45 minutes. It stopped when he saw the extent of the injuries he had caused and started to cry."

After the attack, the woman managed to escape the home and went a friend's house before the police were called. She sustained "significant injuries", including a bite mark to her nose, bruises all over her body and fractures to her eye socket and nose.

Mr Culley added there were "blood spatters on the walls of the house" and that the woman's body was "black and blue with bruises". When Tweedie was interviewed by police, he made no comment.

In a victim statement, the woman said the attack had knocked her confidence and left her a "shadow of the person I was". She said she was once "happy and bubbly" but now feels "constant physical and emotional pain".

The court heard Tweedie had four previous convictions for four offences, and had been jailed for 40 months in 2015 for grievous bodily harm against a previous partner. He was also still serving a suspended sentence for carrying out another section 47 assault on the same woman as the January attack.

David Callan, defending, said Tweedie works as a scaffolder who intends to move in with his grandfather once released from prison. He said: "He doesn't have problems with relationships in general. His probation officer speaks of good and supportive relationships with (family members) but accepts that when he's had cocaine and or alcohol, he has problems with relationships."

Sentencing Tweedie, Judge Robert Spragg said the attack was "cowardly, unprovoked and sustained" and that the defendant should be "thoroughly ashamed".

Tweedie was jailed for two years and eight months and a restraining order was imposed until further order.
