A troublesome patient who had hospital medics on red alert struck fear into a female doctor when he blew his top during treatment.
Wayne Jones, 48, got up close and too personal to the medic at South Tyneside District Hospital – and did so with a clenched fist.
Seconds earlier male nurse Nathan Mackley had gone into the medical bay to ensure his colleague’s safety, a court heard.
It came after he realised Jones, of Percy Street, Jarrow, had flagged up on the South Shields hospital’s security system as a potential risk.
Before threatening the doctor, Jones leapt from his bed, swore – and flung paperwork around the room on Tuesday, January 19.
Prosecutor John Garside told South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court: “Staff nurse Nathan Mackley was aware a female doctor was dealing with a male in a treatment room.
“He was aware that he had flagged up as problematic and shouldn’t be seen alone. He acted as a chaperone and attended the room.
“He heard the male say that he needed long-term medication for a condition.
“The doctor said that she wouldn’t be able to do that and he should see his GP. She said this calmly.
“The defendant was then heard to say that he had been kicked out of his GP surgery in South Shields.
“He jumped off the bed and said, ‘Get the police, I’ll f******come back and fight’.
“He saw documents and he then began to throw them around the room.”
Mr Garside said Jones then confronted the doctor close up, adding: “He was directly in front of her face. He did this with his right fist clenched.
“Security was called and he continued to be aggressive as he was removed.
“When this happened there was a male in the next room with severe learning difficulties, with his mother.”
Mr Garside told the hearing the mum and son had been left distressed by Jones’ actions.
Jones pleaded guilty to causing fear of provocation of violence and to failing to attend the court the previous day, on Tuesday (NOTE – April 13).
Geoffrey Forrester, defending, called for a Probation Service report into Jones’ offending.
Deputy District Judge Jane Hamilton bailed Jones on condition he co-operates with the Probation Service in the compiling of the report.
She also banned him from attending the hospital while drunk except in an emergency.
Jones will be sentenced at the same court on Tuesday, May 18.
