Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn suspended by Labour over sexual harassment claim

Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn has been suspended from the Labour Party over sexual harassment claims.

The Tyneside-born 59-year-old politician has represented the constituency for 22 years.

It's understood his case has been referred to Labour's National Constitutional Committee and he has been suspended pending the investigation.

The panel which took the decision was advised by an independent barrister, following a report carried out by an independent investigator, and was anonymised so the panel did not know who the individual was.

A Labour Party spokeswoman said: "The Labour Party takes all complaints of sexual harassment extremely seriously, which are fully investigated and any appropriate disciplinary action taken in line with the Party's rules and procedures.

"We are determined to challenge and overturn sexual harassment and misogyny within politics and across society as a whole. We cannot comment on individual complaints."
