Jarrow MP Kate Osborne diagnosed with coronavirus and in self-isolation

A South Tyneside MP has tested positive for coronavirus.

Labour MP for Jarrow Kate Osborne has announced she has the disease, and is continuing to quarantine herself.

On Monday morning, she tweeted: "I have been diagnosed with Coronavirus following a period of self isolation and subsequent testing.

"I will continue to self isolate until I have fought off the illness, but in the mean time I would encourage everyone to band together and support the most vulnerable in our communities.

"The NHS are urging people to stay at home for 7 days if you have either a high temperature or a new, continuous cough.

"If you are displaying any symptoms yourself, please self isolate and visit http://111.NHS.UK or call 111 for advice. To all of my constituents, you can still contact me and my staff by emailing Kate.osborne.mp@parliament.uk Thank you, Kate."

Coronavirus: All you need to know about self-isolation

Ms Osborne, who was elected MP for Jarrow in December, would be the first case of coronavirus to be officially confirmed within the South Tyneside area - a patient diagnosed with the disease in South Tyneside Hospital is from Sunderland, and was therefore was listed as being in Sunderland by Public Health England.

On Sunday, the number of UK cases of coronavirus had risen to 1,372, with the Department of Health revealing that the total number of patients who tested positive had risen 232 in a single day.

In total there have been 40,279 tests concluded, of which 38,907 have tested negative. However, there have so far been 35 UK deaths linked to the disease.

With UK measures against the rapidly-spreading disease soon expected to escalate, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has now confirmed that the elderly will be asked to self-isolate for up to four months.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to address the media on Monday about the pandemic alongside chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, following criticism over an apparent lack of transparency in the fight against Covid-19.
