Jarrow and Hebburn Athletic Club tributes to much-loved member of nine decades

He has left a lasting legacy on the North East Athletics community and has been at the heart of the club for over nine decades.

Tributes have been made to John Keefe, Jarrow and Hebburn AC’s “oldest and dearest” member, who sadly passed away on November 28 aged 92 years old.

In 1945 John first joined the club, from the Army Cadets and Youth Organisation Committee, when he lived in Shakespeare Avenue in Hebburn.

He soon became an integral part of the team having notable success which gave the club a strong standing in the region.

In his earlier years. John raced for the team and formed a key part of the club’s relay squads, overall sprint distances and became Club Captain in the 1950s.

John had multiple individual wins at a host of events both locally and across the country.

Alongside his successes, John dedicated his time to the club and has continued to consistently support Jarrow and Hebburn AC throughout his life.

The grandad-of-six made sure he attended all club events, showed support at races and at formal functions and his camaraderie became so important to club life.

He was also a prominent regular and a popular part of the regional athletics scene, with involvement both as an official and as Secretary for the North East Harrier League.

Steve Cram CBE, as Club President, said: "John was an immense presence in the club and the wider athletics community, somewhat belying his quiet, gentle manner.

"He continually gave up his time and energy to help others enjoy our great sport and never sought thanks or reward.

"As a youngster, I first thought he exuded authority and stature, but I grew to appreciate his calming approach and his natural wisdom and intelligence.

"John commanded enormous respect from all those around him for many reasons but perhaps because he was incredibly reliable and always fair and polite. Just a really nice person.

"He was forever encouraging to me and I will always remember his warm smile and kind words.

"When the club celebrated its 80th anniversary, John was one of the few members awarded a prestigious Jarvis Award. We will greatly miss him."
