Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman has said he doesn't 'see the point' of the Reds pursuing a deal for West Ham United's Jarrod Bowen.
Although the likes of Declan Rice and Michail Antonio have grabbed a lot of the headlines during what has been a memorable start to the campaign for the Hammers, Bowen has been one of their most consistent performers.
Able to operate on either flank or behind the centre-forward, the former Hull City man is a vibrant presence in attack and has chipped in with two goals and four assists in the Premier League already this season.
Couple his technical talents with his work-rate off the ball and it's no surprise that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has mentioned how much he likes 24-year-old as a player.
"I like Bowen a lot," said the Reds boss ahead of the meeting between the two sides before the international break. "He made his way up from Hull and took not too long to show exactly what kind of player he can be in the Premier League. He made big steps."
Bowen notched two assists and was a constant threat as West Ham won that encounter 3-2 - and it's It's understood that he is one of a number of options the Liverpool are tracking ahead of next summer.
However, McManaman has said to horseracing.net that he's unsure whether a move for Bowen at this point would make sense for either the Reds or the player.
He said: "He’s a very good player. He’s doing really well at the moment, but hypothetically, if he signed for Liverpool tomorrow, then he wouldn’t play.
"So, I don’t see the point of it at the minute. It could be a great move for him in terms of playing for Liverpool but he’s not going to get in ahead of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane or Diogo Jota.
"It’s always nice to have lots of players and I’m sure the manager would prefer to have 25 established internationals, but that’s not football. Bowen is playing really well at the moment for a club who are in the Champions League positions. Liverpool at the moment don’t need Jarrod Bowen."
