Jarrett Stidham time? Rookie QB enters preseason game before Brian Hoyer

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Jarrett Stidham entered the game as Tom Brady’s backup, taking the field before fellow quarterback and incumbent second-stringer Brian Hoyer during the team’s third preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.

Stidham looked good in the first half, too. He completed six of his nine passes for 52 yards and continued his strong connection with undrafted rookie Jakobi Meyers, who started with the first-team but struggled to get open until the Panthers’ second-team defense took the field.

Stidham entering the game as the Patriots No. 2 quarterback is definitely noteworthy. Hoyer had been Brady’s backup thus far through the preseason. Could this mean the Patriots are open to Stidham being the backup for the 42-year-old Brady? Could Hoyer’s job be in jeopardy?

Brady played three series against the Panthers, and completed 8 of 12 passes for 75 yards. He connected seven times with receiver Phillip Dorsett for 47 yards. But when Brady left the field, after helping the Patriots get a 7-0 lead, that’s when things got interesting.
