Former Armagh captain Jarlath Burns is set to be confirmed as candidate for the GAA presidency on Tuesday night Belfast Live reports.
It is anticipated that the Armagh County board will ratify his nomination and Burns will stand for election for a second time 2023.
The Silverbridge native was narrowly defeated by current GAA president Larry McCarthy back in 2020 . At the time, he was considered the front-runner for the role.
McCarthy will serve the final year of his three-year term in 2023 with a new president being elected at next year’s congress to take over in 2024.
Burns captained the Orchard County to a breakthrough Ulster title win in 1999 and stepped into GAA administration soon after his inter-county retirement.
He served as Armagh’s delegate to Central Council and is currently the county’s Ulster Council delegate.
Burns, a former Sigerson Cup winner with St Mary’s, is also Silverbridge’s club secretary having served as club chairman for a number of years.
The St Paul’s Bessbrook principal would be the second confirmed candidate from Ulster to succeed McCarthy with Donegal giving their backing to Niall Erskine last month.
