Jared Goff unbothered by ‘system QB’ label, doesn’t care about rankings

This offseason was filled with countless rankings, lists and discussions about the top quarterbacks in the NFL. Jared Goff was rarely included in the top 10 of those lists, but he’s not bothered by any apparent disrespect sent his way.

He also doesn’t listen to the noise when called a “system quarterback” or a product of Sean McVay’s scheme. He does a good job focusing on what’s important, like improving as a passer and becoming an extension of the coaching staff, as McVay often says.

“I don’t have a feeling on it,” Goff said Wednesday. “I understand where that narrative started from and it doesn’t bother me because I know what these people in this building think. The only opinions I’m concerned about are my teammates, coaches and close family and friends. Anyone else, it doesn’t matter to me and they can say that all they want. As long as we keep winning games, I’ll be happy.”

Goff looked like a top-10 quarterback for the first 11 weeks of the 2018 season, putting up big numbers prior to the Rams’ bye in Week 12. Then, things began to go south. He was terrible against the Bears and shaky against both the Lions and Eagles, and everyone knows how the Super Bowl went.

Goff has a chance to rise the ranks in 2019 by making his third straight Pro Bowl and once again leading the Rams to the playoffs. He’s not focused on how he’s viewed by outside pundits, but improving each year is a surefire way to earn more respect.
