Jared Goff is quietly great outside the pocket, led NFC West QBs in 2018

No one would ever mistake Jared Goff for being a scrambling quarterback or one who lives outside the pocket. In fact, he’s just the opposite. Sure, he has good enough mobility to elude defenders when necessary, but he’s more of a traditional pocket passer who thrives when he isn’t forced to use his legs.

What many people may not realize is how good Goff is when he does escape the pocket. In fact, there wasn’t a quarterback in the NFC West last season who was better than Goff from outside the pocket, according to Pro Football Focus.

It’s surprising that he finished ahead of Russell Wilson, who’s regularly one of the best mobile passers. He thrives on extending plays and making big throws outside the pocket, but Goff was statistically better than Wilson last season, according to PFF.

This throw might’ve had something to do with it.

Goff may not have elite mobility, but he’s excellent on the run and doesn’t get enough credit for the work he does outside the pocket.
