High-class drugs are increasingly being seized by NT Police enroute to remote communities — with cocaine found smuggled inside a jar of Vegemite earlier this week.
It came after a 28-year-old man was charged, following the discovery of 5 grams of what is believed to be cocaine inside a dietary supplement tablet, which had been sent through the post to Nhulunbuy.
The man is due to appear before the Nhulunbuy Local Court in July, charged with one count of possessing a trafficable quantity of a dangerous drug.
The investigation into the Vegemite incident is ongoing.
"It is truly disappointing to see the recent increase in seizures of methamphetamine, cocaine and other schedule one drugs, destined for these remote areas," Senior Sergeant Carl O'Donnell said.
"Northern Territory Police will continue to target the supply routes of dangerous drugs into remote communities in order to reduce the harm and devastating impact these substances have on the community."
In 2016, a woman pleaded guilty to transporting nearly half a kilogram of methamphetamine from Sydney to Darwin, concealed inside Ferrero Rocher chocolate wrappers.
