Japhet Tanganga transfer blow for Celtic as Tottenham call leaves Neil Lennon scrambling

Celtic have been hit with a second central defensive hammer blow within the space of 24 hours after a move for Japhet Tanganga was kiboshed by Tottenham.

The 21-year-old was being chased by a host of clubs including Southampton and West Brom but Jose Mourinho has decided the England youth international is going nowhere.

Tanganga burst onto the scene last season and earned acclaim for a series of eye-catching displays in the heart of the defence under the Special One's stewardship.

But it's been a different story this season with the towering stopper reduced to a role watching from the outside.

It appeared earlier on Monday that he would be made available for loan but Spurs have decided that is not the best course of action.

It's a particularly cruel blow for struggling Celtic and manager Neil Lennon who watched No.1 target Ben Davies slip away as Liverpool moved at the last minute as he appeared poised to pen a pre-contract agreement with the Premiership champions.

The Irishman admitted in his pre-match press conference before the clash with Kilmarnock that Tanganga wasn't his only central defensive option but any new arrival would be a loan deal.

But one who will almost certainly be joining Celtic is Jonjoe Kenny with Lennon excited about what the rampaging right-back can bring.

He said: "We just need the paperwork to be finished.

"He has been in the building, he travelled up last night so hopefully we can get that signed and sealed this afternoon.

"He's a player I have liked for a while.

"He is at Everton obviously and had a very good career at England youth at under-21 level and I watched quite a bit of him last season when he was on loan at Schalke.

"I like his qualities, his enthusiasm for the game, his character and I think he will bring that to the team.

"He is a bubbly sort of personality and he plays that way as well. He is ready to start and itching to play as well."
