Japhet Tanganga signs new Tottenham contract after breakthrough season

Tottenham youngster Japhet Tanganga has signed a new five-year contract with the club after enjoying a breakthrough season.

Tanganga, a homegrown 21-year-old, was handed his first-team debut under Mauricio Pochettino last September before making 10 further appearances following Jose Mourinho's appointment.

As reported by Standard Sport last week, Tanganga has received a considerable increase on his previous £1,000-a-week wage.

Injury during lockdown prevented Tanganga, who can play across the back four, from adding to his minutes during the restart.

The news comes on the same day fellow defender Jan Vertonghen confirmed his exit from the club after eight years.

Tanganga has previously said he would be happy to remain at Spurs for life.

"This club is fantastic, the staff, the coaches, everyone has just helped me. The club means a lot to me, having been with them for so long," he said in January.

"Of course I’d love to stay with them as long as I could and go on until I retire. But that’s for the club to deal with me and for me to focus on the pitch and deliver as much as I possibly can."
