Japhet Tanganga reveals the wise words he told Alfie Devine before teen made Tottenham history

Japhet Tanganga imparted some words of wisdom to Tottenham Hotspur's new record-breaking teenager Alfie Devine before he made his debut.

Both Tanganga and Devine came on for the second half of Spurs' 5-0 FA Cup victory at Marine on Sunday and the latter would make history - twice.

Devine, who joined Tottenham from Wigan last summer, became the youngest player to play in a competitive fixture for the club at just 16 years and 163 days old.

That broke the record only set a couple of months before by Devine's Tottenham academy team-mate Dane Scarlett in the Europa League.

Devine's day got even better though as he drilled home a low shot to become the club's youngest ever goalscorer as well.

Tanganga made his own big Premier League debut last season against Liverpool last season, having made his first appearance in the Carabao Cup at Colchester.

He spent half-time warming up with Devine on the pitch and admitted that he had a quick word with the teenager who has been impressing everyone at the club.

"He's trained a few times with us and every time he's come up he's looked a real spark. He's doing well," said Tanganga.

"When he was coming on [with me at half-time], I just told him, 'Keep it simple, do what you've been doing in training – there's a reason why you've been training up'.

"Today you saw glimpses of his ability, a really professional performance. I'm really happy for him to get his first professional goal. He's a really good player and there's more to come as well."

On Devine's record-breaking goal, he added: "It's a great achievement and it was a great goal. I'm happy for him and hopefully from here it's a confidence boost, knowing that the manager can put him in for these games.

"He's shown he can hustle, he's shown what he can do, so hopefully from here he can kick on and get more appearances for the club."

On playing at Marine - who sit 161 places below Spurs in the football ladder - with their stadium which backs on to Crosby residents' gardens, Tanganga said it was all about getting the job done.

"It's different. Playing with the U23s before going into the first team, we had a few games which we played at stadiums like this," he said.

"You just have to professional and get the job done, and we did that."
