Japhet Tanganga reveals his Raheem Sterling plan and why he had to contain himself vs Man City

Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish will not be looking forward to Tottenham's trip to the Etihad Stadium in February.

Both handed starts on the opening weekend of the Premier League season against Tottenham, the Man City duo barely got a kick thanks to Japhet Tanganga's defensive masterclass.

The academy ace left the pair extremely frustrated over the course of the 90 minutes as he gave them no space to operate down City's left flank and subsequently marked them out of the contest.

Hailed for "a complete performance" by Jose Mourinho in his start against City in the league last February, the player once again came in for praise from his boss as Nuno Espirito Santo waxed lyrical about him in his press conference.

Knowing he had such a tough test on his hands against the players, Tanganga opened up on his pre-match plans to stop City getting any joy through Sterling and Grealish.

"I think I had my tactics. In the nicest way possible, Raheem was away with England and he did so well with England," he told Spurs TV after the 1-0 win.

"So you know he needed some time off, but I knew coming into this game I had six weeks of preparations and he maybe had less.

"I knew I had to go after him to make sure he didn't grow into the game. Not only me but the team recognised that and, like I said, it paid off and we got the three points."

Not completing the full 90 minutes as Matt Doherty replaced him for the final seven minutes of the contest, the fans sung "Japhet Tanganga, he's one of our own" as he made his way around the pitch to a standing ovation.

It was a moment the versatile defender will never forget.

"It's amazing. Like I said, you know we felt the presence of the fans, They were amazing today," said the 22-year-old.

"I am just glad they recognised the work we put in and obviously we gave them a win today and three points on the board as well.

"It's an amazing feeling. As a kid you hear on TV and dream about these things. To happen to you it's an amazing feeling.

"Honestly walking around I had chills. I had to contain myself and make sure I came around to the bench.

"It was an amazing feeling and I really appreciate it."
