Japhet Tanganga makes big Jose Mourinho claim as he names the Tottenham player who gave him hope

Japhet Tanganga has been one of the shining lights in an otherwise forgetful season for Tottenham.

Handed his Premier League debut by Jose Mourinho in January for the crunch clash against Liverpool, the academy ace didn't look out of place at all as the team fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat.

The 20-year-old has featured regularly in the side since his home bow and he has played in a number of different positions across the defence over the past couple of months.

Tanganga appears to have a huge future on his hands at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and fans can look forward to seeing a lot more of him over the coming years.

Speaking to the Premier League after collecting his debut ball, the centre-back opened up on life under Mourinho and made a big claim about the 57-year-old.

"For me, to be the age I'm at and to be working under him is honestly phenomenal," he said.

"And honestly, to look back, how every long my career goes on for, I'll forever remember this moment, working under such a manager who has won the Champions League, Premier Leagues, he's won so much.

"He's, for me, the best manager in the world."

Impressing on the club's pre-season tour of Asia in the summer, Mauricio Pochettino gave Tanganga his senior debut in the shock Carabao Cup defeat at Colchester United in September.

He was joined in the team that evening by fellow academy graduate Oliver Skipp and he has claimed that the midfielder gave him hope after he made his debut in the competition 11 months earlier against West Ham.

"From young, as soon as I signed for Tottenham, my ambition was to break into the first team and play for them," he added. "And to finally do that is just amazing. "Honestly, that's all I can say.

"I was in the changing room with Oliver Skipp, who got into the first team last season.

"So, it was a motivational push to know that it's possible, it can be done.

"Your teammates are doing it, so you can do it. You just have to work and hopefully your opportunity comes."
