The 51-year-old woman who was allegedly murdered had posted her desire to be euthanized and expressed her anguish and frustration regarding her worsening condition on her Twitter account and her blog before she was killed.
"Do I have to keep suffering like this? Euthanasia should be accepted," reads the first message on her blog.
The woman created the blog in May 2018, according to people related to the case. At around the same time, she created a Twitter account where she posted messages such as, "My aim is to be euthanized," and "I hope the record of my struggles will be of use to other patients who want the same thing as I do."
The woman was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) around 2011 when she was in her mid-40s. This was around the same time she had quit her job and moved back home to Kyoto to live with her parents. She had been working for a company in Tokyo after graduating from Doshisha University, according to her acquaintance and her posts, and had studied abroad. After being diagnosed, she moved out of her parents' home and lived by herself in the city.
As the disease progressed, she became unable to eat or speak on her own and was given around-the-clock nursing care. She had to use a special computer that could input words by reading her eye movements to write her blog and tweets.
"I'm so miserable because I can't move my fingers," she tweeted. "I can't live in this body. I don't even think I'm alive."
She posted messages through Nov. 29, the day before she was killed.
Just before her death, she wrote: "I'm worried about how much it would cost to die of an illness in a rental apartment. I don't want to burden my family with the cost. I don't know how to make a will."
