Japanese students use umbrellas for shade and virus safety

It's three in the afternoon. As the harsh sunlight continues to shine, groups of children who have finished classes for the day, have gathered in groups in the school's courtyard to prepare to go home. Each of them carrying an umbrella in their tiny hands.

At Dojiyama elementary school in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, a program that acts as a countermeasure for both the novel coronavirus and heat stroke by encouraging students to walk home under an open umbrella every day was started on May 27, the day that classes restarted. The umbrellas not only block out the sunlight, but also maintains enough space between each student so that they can remove their masks if they wish. As I stood there, wearing a hat and mask and dripping with sweat, I envied the children standing beneath the shade provided by their umbrellas.
