There were 8,470 Japanese nationals as of May 1 who have managed to return to Japan after the spread of the new coronavirus hit their countries of residence.
Five-hundred more nationals from 30 countries want to return to Japan, 350 of whom are expected to have left for Japan by Thursday.
About 60 people left Peru by a chartered plane from a local travel agency Monday, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ministry has been asking other countries to allow Japanese nationals to board chartered planes.
"We will continue to provide the needed support," said Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
