Japanese pupils probe social issues in English-language newspaper contest

A group from Ochanomizu University Senior High School has won this year's English-language newspaper production contest for their paper titled "The FrontieR," which focused on recent social issues such as gender and the burden of multiple redeliveries on home-delivery services.

About 300 students belonging to 10 groups from eight high schools, some of which are combined with junior high schools, took part in the All Japan Junior and Senior High School English Newspaper Contest held Saturday in Tokyo.

"I want to tell all our members immediately about this result and share the joy of winning," said Rena Otaka, 18, a third-year student and the representative of Ochanomizu's Ran class, after receiving the top English Newspaper Award at the award ceremony.

About 40 students of the Ran class were divided into several groups and shared tasks such as writing and editing articles. Students chose the subject of the articles, and conducted interviews and researched the issues by themselves.

Some wrote about an event held to raise gender awareness, while others focused on the issue of the increasing number of redeliveries that home-delivery services have to make, and proposed an effective solution.

All of the articles were about current issues, so the students decided on FrontieR as their title, emphasizing "R" because they are the Ran class. The newspaper took almost six months to finish.

Another group from Ochanomizu -- the Ume class -- won the runner-up prize. A group from Kokugakuin Kugayama Junior and Senior High School won two special prizes -- the Foreign Media Award and the Regional Promotion Award.

The contest was organized by the Global Education Information Center and was supported by The Japan News.
