Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshi Kajiyama officially announced Friday that the government will discontinue the use of or shut down about 90% of the nation's inefficient coal-fired power plants and shift to eco-friendly energy sources.
The government plans to close about 100 inefficient coal-fired power plants by fiscal 2030. It will also research the possibility of implementing new rules to promote the use of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.
"Inefficient coal-fired power generation emits a lot of CO2," Kajiyama said at a press conference held after a Cabinet meeting on the day.
"As a nation with scarce natural resources, we'll consider the best mix [of power sources] that includes renewable energy, while improving efficiency [of coal-fired power generation]," the minister said.
