Japanese knotweed: Council wages war on destructive plant that can destroy homes

North Dubliners are being asked to look out for an invasive weed that can damage roads and even destroy homes.

Fingal County Council is urging the public to let them know immediately if they spot the destructive Japanese knotweed in their area.

The local authority is waging war on the rampant plant, which was first introduced to Ireland from Japan in the 1850s by landscape gardeners.

It escaped from gardens and has now spread all over Ireland. The council is warning that the invasive species can seriously undermine the structural integrity of roads and buildings.

Fingal is now asking the public to record all sightings of Japanese knotweed on public and private property so that they can identify any remaining strands that haven't yet been recorded.

184 locations have been identified in north county Dublin so far (www.invasivespeciesireland.com)

A spokesman for the council said: "In Fingal, the plant can be found throughout the county, but is particularly abundant in Balbriggan.

"Fingal County Council is keen to eradicate this invasive species. 184 locations have been identified so far and a treatment program got underway in 2018 with the aim to eradicate the Japanese knotweed from the county.

"All sightings of Japanese Knotweed in Fingal can be submitted to the County Council by email to biodiversity@fingal.ie.

"The Council is asking the public to include a map or a precise location of the stand and ideally include a picture of the plant to confirm if it is Japanese Knotweed.
