Japanese fun

Bangkok is a city that has never been short of good food options and even the pandemic has not slowed it down.

Entering the food fray, is Tokyo Neo, which will open its doors on Soi Convent soon. A local Japanese izakaya serving easy bites and other delights, it is currently only open for delivery and takeaway. Tokyo Neo promises a fresh take on the Japanese bistro-style eatery serving simple yet delicious finger food or more filling fare.

The chef behind this colourful and delightful place is Goro Takatsu, who brings his unique perspective to the table. Having trained in traditional Japanese cooking in Nagoya, chef Takatsu took his technical prowess to Europe and Latin America, where he learned new cooking styles and showcases it at Tokyo Neo.

From the Rolls section, the Double Dragon (B280) is a tasty mix of unagi, avocado and cucumber. If you prefer something spicy, go for the Spicy From Hell (B250), which is hamachi, spicy guacamole and jalapeño. Though the Surf and Turf Tokyo roll (B390) of beef tenderloin and kisu tempura gets my taste buds going.

A classic example of chef Takatsu's convention-meets-invention is seen in the Tokyo Neo karaage: a highlight. A chef's special, the home-cooking style fried chicken is juicy-on-the-inside, crispy-on-the-outside and comes with a Takatsu twist on flavours. The Yuzukochu (B190) is the one to go for, though there are five other flavours to choose from.

A must-have either as an amuse bouche or a palate cleanser is the Japanese Tomatoes Fun (B180), which is an absolutely delicious mix of top quality tomatoes, aubergine, shiso leaf and mala tomato water. Pro tip: Chill the salad as soon as it arrives, including the dressing and eat it cold. You can thank me later. ;)

I absolutely love sashimi and the Sashimi salad (B390) did not disappoint. Though if you're looking for something more substantial, Tokyo Neo has Pork curry rice (B220) or donburi choices. It also has a robust Robatayaki corner with the likes of Tsukune (B80 per piece), Chicken wings yuzukocho (B70 per piece), Pork belly teriyaki (B80) and a few others, including veggie options. If you're a snacky person, get the Octopus wasabi (B190) or the Fried squid with yuzu mayo (B180).

Tokyo Neo has something for every Japanese food fanatic: favourites and innovative creations. The second best thing about it, after the food of course, is the old-school pop atmosphere. Bold splashes of colour, 80s paraphernalia and anime-esque artwork stickers on the delivery bowls make for a fun and funky time ideal for kicking back and letting the good times sushi-roll.
